Using the finest materials in the industry right through to how we manufacture our kitchens, allows us to produce bespoke furniture that ensures lasting quality and longevity for our clients.
When embarking on your kitchen project, beyond incorporating sustainable materials, there are additional methods to enhance its sustainability. Below we have gathered a few tips to assist you in creating a sustainable kitchen that not only boasts a beautiful aesthetic but also promotes environmental responsibility.
1. A meticulously crafted kitchen built for enduring longevity
Our furniture is meticulously crafted in Hitchin. Generations of skilled cabinetmakers have contributed to maintaining a high standard of workmanship for our projects, both present and future.
The creation of truly bespoke furniture relies on thoughtful consideration of the capabilities of our craftsmen. We provide them with a conducive workshop environment and the essential tools to produce this exquisite furniture. Our approach seamlessly combines the art of traditional methods with the precision of modern machinery.
For every kitchen we bring to life, our design team is dedicated to maximising the functionality and practicality of each kitchen. Choose classic styles throughout the design stage that remain in fashion for years. Even if you fancy a change later on down the line, a simple repaint can effortlessly rejuvenate the entire kitchen.
2. Incorporate as much natural light as you can
Adding large windows or skylights into your space allows for more natural light. Incorporating this into your design reduces the need for artificial lighting and saves energy.
In the Digswell project there are two large traditional windows along the main kitchen run and above is a beautiful glass roof lantern. Light is channelled around all corners of the space, lighting up each element and the whole space beautifully.
3. Look for appliances with an excellent energy efficiency rating
Choosing appliances with an outstanding energy efficiency rating, consume less energy and contribute to a lower carbon footprint. In the UK, the energy efficiency of fridge freezers is graded from A+++ to D, with A+++ being the most efficient. Sub-Zero, Miele, Fisher & Paykel, and Neff fridge freezers are an excellent choice for individuals aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and cut down on energy expenses.
Furthermore, these appliances mentioned are renowned for their durability, ensuring customers invest in products that are not only energy-efficient but also built to withstand the test of time.
In our Haynes project, we find a freestanding Miele refrigerator and freezer amongst the country surroundings and our bespoke In-Frame Shaker.
The perfect example is our Bedfordshire project featuring a Fisher & Paykel French Door built in its own housing. Styling and turning this 1920s house into a perfect family home that feeds our client’s three hungry young boys.
4. Save water and energy
Are you thinking of adding a dishwasher to your kitchen layout? Opt for one that features a half-load or ECO option, conserving water and energy. Miele and Neff dishwashers, in particular, are designed to enhance environmental friendliness compared to standard washing cycles. This particular setting reduces water and energy usage by prolonging the wash cycle, ensuring a thorough cleaning with fewer resources. Both of these dishwashers are a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and also contribute to cost savings on energy bills.
Working in this grand space in Hinxworth, the kitchen island features a Miele Integrated Dishwasher. Load up the dishwasher and enjoy those garden views from the large windows and doors.
Along the main kitchen run in the Tewin project sits 2x Neff Integrated Dishwashers. All the elements found in this expansive space from the Neff appliances, to the décor, blend harmoniously with one another, and no one material or texture stands out and feels disconnected.
5. Plan for a well-ventilated kitchen
Having a well-ventilated kitchen can enhance indoor air quality and lower energy expenses. Effective ventilation helps to prevent moisture accumulation and enhances air circulation. We collaborate with Westin mostly on our Planet Furniture projects, as they are the foremost brand in the UK for cooker hoods. Westin offers a selection of chic and functional cooker hoods designed to eliminate cooking odours and smoke from your kitchen.
What sets Westin cooker hoods apart is their exceptional extraction system, ensuring efficient air purification to maintain a fresh and clean kitchen ambience. These cooker hoods are not only energy-efficient but also incorporate LED lights for excellent cooking illumination. With many various finishes and designs available, you will find one to complement your kitchen style.
We love working with Westin, providing our clients with fresh air from Yorkshire in their new kitchens. They have also become a big name within the British kitchen industry.
The perfect setup has been designed in our Bedfordshire project. The Westin Prime cooker hood sits beautifully in the bespoke mantle bringing a whole lot of function to the kitchen space.
The cooking area in the Hitchin project is complete with a Westin Cache Extractor that sits in the bespoke mantle with supporting corbels. It’s a beautiful centrepiece for this grandeur kitchen.
To sit above the sleek black Lacancache Range Cooker is the Westin Bloque Pro Extractor. Our Haynes project knows exactly how to treat the cook and the brick is a different type of splashback to our other projects but one that pays off and looks wonderful!
6. Efficient storage solutions are always best
Opting for efficient storage solutions within an eco-friendly kitchen can help to reduce waste and promote sustainability. Pull-out bins with recycling inserts make sorting out the waste easier.
7. Opt for flooring made from natural materials
Limestone is a great flooring choice as it’s recognised for its durability, versatility, and aesthetic appeal. Being a natural material, Limestone demands minimal energy. Furthermore, as a non-toxic material, Limestone does not release harmful chemicals, making it a safe and health-conscious flooring option for both residential and commercial spaces.
8. Make a smart choice and choose LED lighting
Introducing LED lighting into your kitchen is a wise decision for sustainability, given its energy efficiency and prolonged lifespan. LED lights are an intelligent choice as they contribute to lower energy consumption, minimising environmental impact. They also consume much less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, reducing the frequency of replacements and, consequently, waste.
Additionally, this type of light allows you to decrease your carbon footprint but also contributes to building a more sustainable future.
9. A sustainable approach
Every piece of furniture that is produced by our skilled craftsmen is built from the finest materials and timbers, from FSC-certified forests. This means that our timber is sourced using only trusted importers who promote and support all environmental issues related to the timber products they supply.

From the initial design through to the manufacturing of our bespoke cabinetry and the sourcing of the very best finishes, appliances and hardware that suit your style means that every element of a Planet Furniture kitchen is chosen for its beauty, durability and sustainability.
At Planet Furniture, we are proud to offer not only beautiful and luxurious kitchens, but sustainable ones that will last a lifetime. We look forward to hearing from you and designing your dream kitchen that suits all of your needs.
