With the sixth season premiered just a few months ago on Netflix, Selling Sunset is back with new cast members and a whole lot of new luxury homes to feast our eyes on. Have you caught up with it yet? The PF team loves this show, looking at all the gorgeous homes, especially the luxurious kitchens.
It’s hard to believe that some of the homes shown on Selling Sunset are real places where people live. From the gigantic bathrooms to the incredible sitting rooms and (our favourite of course) the luxurious kitchens.
To celebrate the latest season and help you bring aspects of the L.A. lifestyle to your home in the UK we have put together a blog with some essential factors on what this show has taught us. Find yourself immersed in kitchens that are dripping in glamour and luxury, from wow appliances, and bespoke cabinets, to high-end worktops.
About Selling Sunset
Selling Sunset is a popular reality TV series that premiered on Netflix in March 2019. The show revolves around the high-end real estate market in Los Angeles, particularly in the Hollywood Hills and the Sunset Strip. It combines elements of real estate drama with personal drama among the real estate agents working for The Oppenheim Group, a high-profile real estate brokerage.
The kitchen is the hub of the home
When it comes to the kitchen, open-plan living is a widely preferred feature and is abundantly showcased on Selling Sunset. In the show, every home boasts an impressive kitchen, often being the initial room introduced by realtors to prospective buyers and their agents. The attraction of these kitchens is evident due to their remarkable spaciousness.
In addition to these open-plan kitchen-living spaces, the rooms typically offer breathtaking views of the stunning Los Angeles skyline, often featuring an infinity pool in the foreground.
At Planet Furniture, we recognise that a kitchen serves as an investment that can ultimately be the deciding factor in a house sale. The right kitchen can make the distinction between achieving the asking price or needing to negotiate. Therefore, the spending on the kitchen has to be appropriate for the value of the house.
The trends in the UK differ somewhat from those in the USA. We are gradually shifting away from fully open-plan homes and moving towards a more broken-plan style of living. This design approach combines the spaciousness of open-plan layouts with distinct zones and separation for various purposes.
Creating all-white kitchens
When tuning into Selling Sunset, you’ll quickly notice that the colour white is the predominant colour in the majority of kitchens. There will occasionally be bursts of colour making an appearance, but the main theme across the homes is a bright white – pure and simple.
These white kitchens give off a splendid charm under the radiant L.A. sun, however, they are becoming more popular in the UK as we now see the Hygge approach, everywhere! Even though our weather in the UK is temperamental we are seeing a lot more sun and warmer days! Homeowners are still after the greys and darker blues that have been a kitchen trend for many years, and now the earthy greens that allow us to connect with nature.
Having the space
As you can imagine the homes that we come across in this programme are humongous with every kitchen having an island and they are truly something else. They aren’t just any island but a grand one that can seat 6 or more, multi-million dollar homes in America don’t do things by halves.
Breakfast bar seating is still highly sought after for casual dining, we know this as it’s still popular in many of our kitchen projects, but many alternatives are growing in popularity. There’s the choice of banquette seating that offers a far more flexible solution, being added to the end of the island in a circular shape or ‘inside’ the L-shape of an island. This type of seating adds its individuality to the kitchen.
Not just a kitchen a chef’s kitchen
The most prestigious homes that you will find on the show are highly likely to include a complete ‘chef’s kitchen’ which as the name suggests, is designed to meet the needs of a professional chef and host special dinner parties.
The space will be big enough to accommodate cooks, as well as a wide variety of top-end appliances that are likely to include multiple types of ovens and additional features such as a warming drawer and a secondary sink.
A lot of our projects now consist of a built-in wine fridge, hot water taps and even a second dishwasher.
Incorporating an industrial touch
White is the dominant colour palette showcased on the show but to add texture and depth to this, there will be touches of wood, granite, concrete and marble to create an industrial twist. This will include additions such as bar stools with metal bar stools, open shelving made from chunky oak and lots of stainless steel and chrome accents.
Over here in the UK, an industrial style is very much the modern kitchen of today. It’s such a versatile design that if you change your mind later on you can easily update this style.
