Finishing the Kitchen Design with a Toughened Antiqued Mirror Splashback5 min read

Treat your home to a toughened antiqued mirror splashback. They are a stylish and functional choice for kitchen and bathroom designs, where they combine the vintage and timeless appeal with the durability and safety of toughened glass. They have become a sought-after finishing product in a bespoke kitchen and in this blog, we have plenty of projects to show you where these clever products sit.

The term “antique mirror” refers to a specific type of glass that has a distressed or aged appearance, often featuring smoky or blotchy patterns. This type of mirror gives a vintage and elegant look to your space, making it stand out from regular mirrored or plain glass splashbacks.

Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is processed to increase its strength and safety. It is much stronger than regular glass and shatters into small, relatively harmless fragments when broken, reducing the risk of injury.

Who do we work with?

We are proud to work with the lovely team over at Rough Old Glass, born from the combined experience of two people, a restorer and conservator, who worked within the National Trust & English Heritage. Located in North Devon, these decorative surfaces now appear in many private homes, bars, restaurants and hotels worldwide.

The benefits

Enhanced perception of space

The beauty of a mirrored surface is that it reflects the light and creates an illusion of a larger and brighter space. In a kitchen, this effect can be especially beneficial if you have limited space or a small kitchen, making the area feel more open and less cramped.

Increased light

Mirrored splashbacks bounce light around the room, which can reduce the need for additional artificial lighting during the day. Not only saving energy and reducing bills but also providing a well-lit workspace in the kitchen.

A timeless and elegant look

These beautiful mirrored surfaces have a classic and elegant appearance that can fit a wide range of kitchen styles, from contemporary to traditional, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication too.

Easy to clean

Being a smooth surface and one large piece of mirror they are relatively easy to clean and maintain. Just simply wipe them down with a glass cleaner to remove splatters and stains, making them a practical choice for a kitchen where messes are common.

Reflecting views

If you are lucky with a beautiful view outside your kitchen or if it opens up to an outdoor area, a mirrored splashback can help bring the outdoors in. You can enjoy the view while working and hosting in the kitchen.

Customised to suit

You can customise your mirrored splashback in many different ways, choosing a different mirror finish to match your kitchen’s style and colour scheme. You can also have them cut to fit specific dimensions and shapes.

Versatile design

Mirrored splashbacks can complement a variety of other materials and design elements that you can introduce to your kitchen.

Creating a focal point

They serve as a captivating focal point in your kitchen, drawing attention to a particular area, such as the cooking area or decorative element, adding visual interest to the space.

Easy installation

Typically straightforward to install, especially when compared to tile or stone backsplashes, mirrored splashbacks can save you time and labour costs during the kitchen remodelling process.

Resale value

The elegance and functionality that a mirrored splashback can bring, are great to add value to your home. It’s a feature that can attract potential buyers and make your kitchen stand out in the real estate market.

Our projects

Below we show you some of our portfolio that features this beautiful addition.

Hitchin Project

Other than the paint colours adding visual interest and enhancing the perception of space in this project, the silver antiqued mirror splashback does that too. The reflective surface creates and illusion of depth and adds a luxurious look to this kitchen’s aesthetics.

Bedfordshire

In this kitchen, every corner is dedicated to something new and enticing and this is most certainly portrayed when it comes to the splashback. Behind the Steel Cucine range cooker we find a hand-silvered antiqued mirror in vintage and bronze.

Digswell

What we find here in this gorgeous countryside home is a wonderful light olive Lacanche range complete with an antiqued mirror splashback. Just look at the reflection where the cook can chat with the guests perched on the island!

Hitchin

Adding to this beautiful Grade II listed building is this hand-silvered antiqued mirror splashback. It adds a touch of glamour and together with the range cooker, both are beautifully framed by a bespoke mantle and large supporting corbels.

Royston

Set amongst this striking industrial kitchen we created for this Royston home, antiqued vintage mirror splashbacks sit behind the sink and prep area. Who can deny that they elevate any kitchen from the ordinary to the beautiful?

Knebworth

To add to the cohesive design and provide a stunning, functional focal point, we added a hand-silvered antique mirror behind the range.

Letchworth

Something a little different to our other projects where we find the antiqued mirror splashback at the cooking areas, this one is designed into a drinks cabinet! Yes, a drinks cabinet that plays an elegant tribute to this fresh kitchen space.
