Kitchen Design Inspiration

The Versatile Peninsula by Planet Furniture3 min read

The kitchen is a hardworking space and finding the perfect layout is vital. The peninsula is a flexible and practical choice, bringing the kitchen together and neatly bridging the gap between several designs. Adding a peninsula increases your storage, adds worktop space and makes a designated area for dining – the options are endless.

This type of furniture is often thought of as an alternative to large kitchen island units for smaller spaces, though they do offer a wealth of opportunity for any kitchen size. They are connected to the wall on one side, gaining more space than other layouts as it allows the feeling of additional space.

You can have the peninsula scaled to fit within any sized kitchen, thanks to our beautiful handcrafted furniture.

The Peninsula

As previously mentioned it’s similar to an island built with underneath units and worktops, but instead of being free-flowing in the middle of the kitchen, one end is attached to a wall. The unit is accessible from three sides, offers an extension of the kitchen cabinets and can also act as a divider in open-plan spaces.

They can be fitted to the room in many different ways depending on the layout.

What are the Benefits?

It’s always good to know the benefits of each kitchen design and a peninsula can bring lots of potential and qualities to any layout, including additional counter space and storage and ideally suited to smaller kitchens. You can even incorporate a dog bed underneath. This versatility makes this design one of the must hardworking and desirable options when planning a kitchen.

Chopping and cooking on a peninsula can prove more pleasant instead of working on a worksurface tucked under a wall cabinet. They still have the same benefits as an island.

Our Different Designs

As part of the Elmoor Avenue development project, this lightly coloured L-shaped bespoke kitchen sits completed with a beautiful and timeless peninsula in Plot 3. A space dedicated to extra worktops and storage doubling up as a breakfast bar too. The seating just needs to be added but what a lovely space where our classic Lay-On Shaker style lies.

The next project, still part of the Elmoor Avenue development site is Plot 2. Hand-painted in a mellow green, still designed in an L-shaped layout but this time on the opposite side and with adequate space to build in a timeless peninsula. This design cleverly bridges the gap and adds additional storage, worktops and a stunning seating area.

The peninsula doesn’t have to be particularly long, consider a shorter unit and installing integrated appliances for a personalised prep space just like our project in Royston. A lovely little bar area has been created in this kitchen with a full-stave solid oak breakfast bar offering a contrast to the Nile Carrara quartz worktops and somewhere to prop with friends and a glass of wine!

Our client wanted a clean run of cabinets and didn’t want to break up the design with an integrated wine fridge and the space wasn’t big enough for a central island, so the team at PF came up with the idea of a peninsula. It defines the zones of the open-plan space without completely separating the living room and is the ideal place for the wine fridge. We hand-painted the peninsula in a contrasting colour to the rest of the cabinetry in this Welwyn project.
