Introducing the Biophilic Design to the Kitchen – Connecting with Nature Indoors4 min read

How can we connect with nature more in our homes? The biophilic design is a key concept that’s changing the way we think and feel about the kitchen. Nowadays we want to tap into our natural habitat to form spaces that improve our physical and mental health.

There’s been an increasing time spent indoors in recent years and more homeowners are looking towards ways of designing and adapting their homes that invite the outdoors in.

Captivate the eye and nurture the soul with the following design tips to create a biophilic kitchen design.

What is biophilic design?

Introducing the biophilic design to the kitchen is quite simple. It starts with a light, bright and airy atmosphere with plenty of potted plants and nature-inspired finishes and materials. Lots of homeowners are building spaces that focus on improving their physical and mental well-being throughout the surroundings and having a human connection with nature. They want a place where they can escape, reducing stress and anxiety and stimulating their creativity. Life is busy!

Adding the biophilic design to the kitchen with…

Natural materials

A huge part of this design is about the materials we use to connect with nature. We want to choose natural materials that we would see in the outside world, such as wood, natural stone, metals and glass.

Stone is a great way of connecting with nature, this can either be through the worktops or flooring. There are many quartz worktops available that can help you achieve an organic aesthetic of marble, granite, and concrete, without compromising on durability. Worktops that are light and marble-inspired are sensational, offering a softer look, or you could go bold with a heavy vein darting through the surface. Complement the overall look with a matching splashback to add to the luxurious ambience.

Wooden elements are another natural material and of course an obvious choice. Each wooden element can introduce a warm and calm atmosphere to the home. This can be brought into the design with an island and solid butcher’s block or centring the room around those beautiful exposed wooden beams that are part of the property’s history. Our bespoke cabinetry and internals are made from solid oak and can add to the wood finishes for a sophisticated design.

Green and blue hues

We know that a biophilic kitchen design helps us to connect with nature, so refreshing greens, tranquil blues and happy yellows are perfect colours to promote positivity and our overall sense of well-being. Green is defined as an organic colour that brings a feeling of health, harmony and energy to busy open-plan multi-functional spaces.

Natural colour palette

If you aren’t ready to go for something like green or blue, perhaps consider a neutral colour scheme to create a much softer natural environment. Opting for a beautiful soft stone colour can provide the perfect backdrop to a biophilic design. Neutral colours can still connect with nature!

Biomorphic shapes and patterns

Biomorphic comes from forms that are presented in an abstract way, relying on contour, patterns and textures to draw a connection to nature. Opt for softer curved lines and patterns that are reminiscent of nature and living organisms.

Natural fabrics

Consider organic fabrics such as linen, cotton and wool throughout the interior choice, it gives a deeper connection to nature creating warmth and visual interest in the open-plan space. You can make the living area cosy with blankets and woven tablecloths can be placed on the dining table.

Greenery

Living greenery defines the biophilic design, it’s one of the most effective ways of bringing this style to the home. Adding plants to your kitchen is a great way to bring the outdoors in and improve our mental state and sense of well-being.

Flow natural light around the room

Natural light is a huge part of the biophilic design, offering many benefits as well as boosting our health and happiness. Have a look into floor-to-ceiling windows or doors as these can achieve the ultimate biophilic feature. This design creates a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors.
