Where Past Meets Present: Designing a Bespoke Kitchen Beside Original Mill Features3 min read

Designing a kitchen in a historic building is about respecting the architecture, the stories embedded in the walls, and the craftsmanship that came long before us. When we were commissioned to create one of our beautiful, bespoke, handmade kitchens within a beautifully reimagined old mill, the brief was set clearly, to honour the past while delivering a kitchen perfect for modern living.

Modern living is now the way of life, and bespoke kitchens now show this through their details and technology. It was a pleasure for our team to demonstrate how our thoughtful design can bridge heritage and contemporary life alongside the original mill machinery. It’s a space where the past truly meets the present, and we are very thrilled to share it.

Where Bespoke Kitchen Design is Essential for a Historic Setting

It’s very exciting and impressive to work in historic settings, but they can bring challenges. They can be spaces full of uneven walls, unusual layouts, and original features that must remain untouched, and that means a standard kitchen won’t do. This is where custom kitchen design becomes essential.

Working around an existing mill, our cabinetry was carefully positioned to complement the original machinery, allowing it to be part of the kitchen’s structure. We kept it as the main focal point and integrated modern functions surrounding it to boost modern living. Features included a bespoke wine rack and banquette seating, admiring the views and a spot for breakfast.

Planet’s bespoke approach allowed us to work in harmony with the building, carefully shaping the layout and details to fit the space flawlessly.

Handmade Craftsmanship That Complements History

Our handmade kitchens bring a level of authenticity that mass-produced furniture simply cannot replicate. We use traditional joinery techniques, solid wood construction and hand-finished details to ensure our kitchens feel as though they’re meant to belong in their surroundings.

For this project in particular, the client opted for our In-Frame Shaker cabinetry to sit harmoniously beside the original mill machinery. We completed the style with ornate beading, moulded posts and careful proportions to create a natural dialogue between old and new.

By integrating subtle, considered details, our bespoke kitchen complements the historic setting while remaining beautifully practical for modern, everyday life.

How We Balance Modern Life With Original Mill Features

One of the most joyful parts of this project was creating a kitchen that supports everyday living with modern appliances, efficient storage and contemporary workflows. Each feature was beautifully integrated into the handmade cabinetry for effortless function.

We carefully produced a layout that respected the sightlines of the original mill machinery, allowing it to remain as the visual centrepiece, and now it’s a kitchen that delivers the best of both worlds: the convenience of today’s life, wrapped in the craftsmanship of yesterday.

The Reasons Why Bespoke, Handmade Kitchens Are Perfect for Heritage Homes

Choosing a bespoke, handmade kitchen allows for complete creative freedom, from cabinet finishes to layouts and dimensions. The finished result will always be something that boosts the building rather than detracts from it.

Our reimagined old mill project is a perfect example of how a handcrafted kitchen can become part of the building’s story.
