The Short Answer
A sneaker room, or shoe room, is a dedicated space for storing and displaying a trainer collection, built around floor-to-ceiling shelving, lighting and display cases so every pair is visible and protected. The best ones size the shelving to the collection, recess LED strip lighting into each shelf, keep rare or limited editions in clear display cases and add a soft floor and somewhere to sit. At Planet Furniture we design and handcraft bespoke sneaker rooms around the collection and the room available. What is a Sneaker Room?

Designing your Sneaker Room
Designing a sneaker room can be a fun and exciting project. You can design and create a space that showcases your sneaker collection and reflects your personal style.- Figure out your budget. Having a budget will help you decide what kind of materials and features you can include in your sneaker room.
- Do you collect a particular brand or like a certain colour? This will help guide you with your design choices and create a cohesive look throughout the space.
- Depending on the size of your sneaker collection, you’ll need to plan accordingly. Storage could include shelves, display cases, and shoe racks. How about considering lighting to showcase each pair?
- In addition to the storage, think about the décor and making it personal. You might want to add artwork or decorative items that complement your theme and showcase your personality.
- You may want to add comfortable seating or a table to your sneaker room to create a comfortable space where you can admire your collection. Consider furniture that is both functional and stylish and matches your theme.
- Good lighting is essential to showcase your trainers and create an inviting atmosphere in the room. Use overhead lighting, spotlights, or LED strips to highlight each of the areas.
Mo Gilligan’s Sneaker Room
We were really excited to work with Mo Gilligan on this project. A lover of sneakers and continuing to grow his collection, Mo decided to turn one of his spare rooms into a sneaker room. It’s not just a hobby for Mo, but a passion that allows him to express his personal style and show his love for athletic footwear. Working with Lucy Mansey an Award Winning Professional Home Organiser too on the project, the space was organised perfectly, with each pair displayed in a specific style or colourway. It’s like walking into a shoe shop, as the floor-to-ceiling boutique display fills all areas of the room. LED strip lighting is recessed into all of the shelves to highlight each and every pair of sneakers on show. And to give it more of a luxurious vibe, a soft carpet was put down so Mo can sink his toes into it while choosing what trainers he is going to wear that day/evening. Mo’s trainer collection has been built around Nike with some other brands too, even focusing on vintage and retro trainers, and collecting the latest releases from his favourite brand. You might spot on the top shelf that some trainers are stored in clear display cases, these are for the rare or limited edition sneakers.Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sneaker room?
A sneaker room is a dedicated space designed to store and display a collection of trainers. It can be styled like a boutique or museum display, with custom shelving and lighting that highlight each pair, or kept minimal so the collection itself is the focal point.
How do you display a sneaker collection?
Floor-to-ceiling open shelving is the most effective way to see a whole collection at a glance. Organising pairs by brand or colourway gives the room a cohesive look, and clear display cases on the top shelves protect rare or limited edition pairs.
What lighting works best in a sneaker room?
LED strip lighting recessed into each shelf highlights every pair and gives the room a boutique feel. It can be combined with overhead lighting or spotlights to create an inviting atmosphere without casting shadows across the shelves.
How much space do you need for a sneaker room?
There is no fixed size. Many sneaker rooms are created in a spare bedroom, with shelving on every wall and a window or seat as a focal point, while a smaller collection can live on a single wall of bespoke shelving. We size the shelving to the collection and plan room for it to grow.
Should rare trainers be stored differently?
Yes. Rare, vintage or limited edition pairs are best kept in clear display cases, usually on the top shelves, so they are protected from dust and handling while still on show.
Does Planet Furniture design bespoke sneaker rooms?
Yes. We design and handcraft bespoke sneaker and shoe rooms, including one for comedian Mo Gilligan, with floor-to-ceiling shelving and recessed LED lighting throughout. Every piece is made in our Hertfordshire workshop, and you can discuss your own room at our Hitchin showroom.
