After white, blue is probably one of the most popular kitchen colours. Blue is calming, and classic and divides the opinions of many, either conjuring up cooler spaces or evoking calm and serenity. Blue represents the beautiful skies and the waves of the water.
Farrow & Ball have a huge range of blue paint colours ranging from light (soothing tones of the sea and sky), mid (dusky denim and cheerful skies), and dark (inky undertones and wonderful alternatives to charcoal grey). We are pretty sure that there will be one for you if you are interested in a blue colour scheme.
A little history of Farrow & Ball
Farrow & Ball was born by two friends named John Farrow and Richard Ball who shared the same passion for making rich colours in an original formulation using only the finest ingredients. Many colours have been added throughout the years to match the era of time.
In this blog, we will talk about some of the blue paints from Farrow & Ball in more detail and show you some examples of these in our hand-painted handmade kitchen projects.
Stiffkey Blue
Stiffkey Blue from Farrow & Ball is based on the Norfolk beach where the mud and cockles share a particular deep navy blue hue. Even though it’s traditional in feel, it’s an excellent alternative to Down Pipe to create a richly dramatic space with a more contemporary finish. When this paint hue is used in well-lit areas of the home it will appear much bluer and works wonderfully when contrasted with Ammonite.
Stiffkey Blue Handleless Kitchen Project in Preston
A different take on the popular white and blue colour scheme as the lighter hue is an understated grey! The island and base cabinets have all been hand-painted in Stiffkey Blue. This deep, inky navy sets the trend for this big and beautiful open-plan space.
What a great use of an understairs space! A splendid walk-in wine room that’s hand-painted in the famous Stiffkey Blue which we have seen this colour all over glossy magazines and the Internet. This is a completely bespoke design to accommodate various sizes of wine bottles, all stored at the right temperature and easily accessible.

We love this well-designed kitchen layout in this navy blue. It works wonders with the wooden elements and the Caesarstone Misty Carrara quartz worktop. The cabinetry is perfectly complemented by the brushed nickel handles and oak shelves with painted gallows brackets.
Hague Blue
Hague Blue from Farrow & Ball is a timeless deep dark blue that takes its name from the fantastically coloured woodwork much used by the Dutch. Filled with green undertones means that this deep and dramatic blue is happy to sit in any room of the home as well as outside.
Hague Blue Kitchen Project in Royston, Herts
The deep dark blue known as Hague Blue injects a lovely balance with the white in this handleless kitchen design. We hand-painted this onto the kitchen island. The drama of the black marble tiles also ensures there’s nothing bland or sterile about this kitchen.
Railings
Railings from Farrow & Ball is a soft black with blue undertones where it’s more blue than black and is a softer alternative. If opted in Full Gloss it creates a handsome and commanding welcome but becomes a much more relaxed feel in the Estate Eggshell finish. The bluer undertones of this dark hue transform rooms into dramatic and enveloping interior spaces.

A pared-back, cool-as-you-like style that features the beautiful Railings by F&B. The colour choices and finishes were key to a contemporary look and here the calm colour scheme using F&B’s Manor House Grey for the main cabinets provides masses of light reflection but is also perfectly offset by the drama of the tall cupboards which are hand-painted in F&B’s Railings.
Railings Kitchen Project in Walkern
A dramatic and enveloping interior has certainly been created inside this property with the use of colour. The smart, handless style is the perfect choice for a busy family that likes to entertain, as all the essentials are kept hidden behind the push-to-open doors and drawers. We hand-painted the island in Railings to complement the Down Pipe used on the other cabinetry.
Parma Gray
Parma Gray from Farrow & Ball is a cool mid-blue and is another colour attributed to the great colourist John Fowler. This particular hue has been used as the backdrop to numerous costume dramas creating the perfect period feel when contrasted with Wimborne White. The cool nature of this colour can feel quite formal when contrasted with a bright white, it is a firm favourite for those who prefer a clean and crisp finish.
Lulworth Blue
Lulworth Blue from Farrow & Ball is a fresh mid-blue where its name comes from the shade of the sea at beautiful Lulworth Cove, Dorset. Paired with Wimborne White or Parma Gray a beautiful colour scheme can be created. Despite its brightness, it can promote deep and peaceful sleep when used in low-lit rooms. You can imagine it being hand-painted onto a cosy nook in the kitchen space.
Wine Dark
Wine Dark from Farrow & Ball is a rich, dark blue inspired by midnight skies where it’s named after the term Homer used to describe the sea. This spiritual colour is F&B’s richest blue and is the perfect addition to the strong blue family, being more sophisticated than the popular Stiffkey Blue and more upbeat than Hague Blue. When used in low-light spaces, Wine Dark becomes even richer, making it particularly glamorous in candlelight and perfect for creating intimate spaces.
Stone Blue
Stone Blue from Farrow & Ball is a lively blue named after the indigo pigment which was often imported in lumps in the 18th century. This lively and saturated colour can be used alongside warmer tones such as Pelt to create an inviting vintage look, or the cooler Mole’s Breath for a cleaner, more contemporary feel.
Scotch Blue
Scotch Blue from Farrow & Ball is new and belongs to the new collection Colour by Nature. This palette of beautiful colours has been created in collaboration with the Natural History Museum to bring the true colours of nature into your home. This intense pigmented blue brings a smart look and luxurious atmosphere to any room, especially those designed for entertaining. Scotch Blue also creates inviting spaces that you can’t wait to escape to at the end of the day.
