  • New Cambridgeshire Project!

    New Cambridgeshire Project!

This is cool, country kitchen at its best. The twee frills of yesteryear have been left behind and this classic Shaker has taken on a pared back, cool-as-you-like style. Bespoke cabinetry in a Cockbead, Inframe design keeps it classic and totally suitable to this beautiful barn conversion near Royston, which we’re proud to introduce as our latest project.

  • Traditional or Comtemporary, or a bit of both?

Traditional or Comtemporary, or a bit of both?

It will be down to personal taste and/or the style of your house whether you opt for a sleek, contemporary style or a traditional, classic design. However the architectural style of your home needn’t dictate the design of your kitchen. We know that a contemporary kitchen can complement the original features of a Victorian home – good proportions, large windows, original tiles and floorboards can offer a great contrast to a smart, handleless finish. Equally a new build home or conversion can benefit from the classic, established look of the more traditional style of kitchen with a muted colour palette. Either way the key to its success will be the way your kitchen designer is sympathetic to the setting of your home.
Here at Planet we often mix up the styles by incorporating high-tech appliances and up-to-the-minute worktops and splashbacks to the well-loved Shaker style.

The design, space and colour scheme of this kitchen have all been thoughtfully considered to accommodate a large, traditional solid oak dining table – a feature which has dictated the classic Shaker style. Limestone flooring, framed cabinets and a muted colour palette all reflect a bygone era but are complemented by the contemporary appliances and finishes. The Antiqued Mirror splashback with gold backing helps to elevate this classic Shaker out-of-the-ordinary and the Lacanche Macon Range Cooker in Mandarin adds warmth and personality. The large Liebherr fridge freezer in Stainless Steel show how old and new can work effectively together.

This contemporary, super-smart kitchen was designed to fit a new extension and with the open space of the garden in mind. The understated, bespoke kitchen design means the focus is on the outdoors when the bi-folds are open or through the expanse of glass in the colder months. Keeping it contemporary, the handless cabinets have been hand painted in F&B’s All White and Little Greene’s Dock Blue. Again, adding a mix of old to the new, the wide planked Oak breakfast bar provides a warm, tactile contrast whilst the integrated Miele appliances inset unobtrusively on the Quartz worktop ensure the sleek, uncluttered finish is maintained.

A real feature of this family kitchen is the bespoke extra-large pantry which was commissioned as a drinks cabinet with integrated wine cooler. Serving both functional and visual purposes it’s designed in the same handless style as the kitchen cabinets with bi-fold doors and painted in the same F&B Old White. Very modern and very suited to its setting

  • New Project to view in Letchworth

New Project to view in Letchworth

As always, our bespoke kitchens are designed and built to suit lifestyle and family needs and this one is no exception. Plenty of island seating and really importantly, lots of room to move around it. Large cabinets and deep drawers for convenient storage plus accessible shelving for cook books and a wine fridge perfectly positioned for the cook! Look closely and you’ll see that the larder is shallow in depth. This was deliberately (and cleverly!) designed to accommodate a large beam behind the back of the cabinet, yet still allows this run of cabinets to look balanced.
We’re loving the distinctive brass handles by Armac Martin against the Hardwicke White paint colour on the cabinetry – along with the Hand Silvered Antiqued mirror splashback there’s plenty of up-to-the-minute design details which ensure this classic shaker is contemporary yes classic in equal measure.

  • How our business has continued throughout COVID-19

How our business has continued throughout COVID-19

Spring is in the air and hope is on the horizon as we reflect on the last 12 months of doing business in such challenging times.

As so many small (and large!) companies have floundered through this pandemic, here at Planet, we are eternally grateful to still be in business and to be doing well. Thanks, in part to us operating in an industry that has always put the home centre stage, which for the best part of a year has become our sanctuary as well as our workplace, school and playground! But, also thanks to our brilliant suppliers, who have gone all out to help us deliver on our promise time and time again despite the, sometimes, slimmed down workforce, and supply limitations further down the supplier chain.

Obviously, like all businesses no matter what sector, we’ve had to adapt to doing things differently and the biggest shift has been the use of tech. Whilst we might be getting a bit Zoom weary, it has been vital at enabling us to present and share designs and to carry on consulting with clients. And, although it’s not quite the same as face-to-face, which is obviously a more natural way of building a relationship with our clients, we actually think video technology will have a permanent role in our business post-Covid, as it’s proved so beneficial for clients who live a bit further away from our showroom.
    20180324 142607500 iOS
The adaptions have continued onto our site visits (which we undertake at the onset of a project and then again later on for the technical survey) where our employees wear the necessary protection, as per the Government guidelines and we have to, kindly, request that clients and other trades vacate the room, if possible, whilst we complete the surveying. Again, everyone we work with (clients and suppliers) have been amazingly supportive and understanding. We’re looking forward to ‘normal’ times when we can all gather on the site, cuppa in hand and discuss the progress of the project.
We’ve been extremely lucky that the only delays our clients have had to experience is sometimes with appliances – some of the lead times on certain items are extremely long so we have to manage this and always make our clients aware of any potential delays in the soonest time possible. Happily, everything else has been fairly normal in terms of supply and lead times. Even our workshop has been able to operate as normal, producing even more bespoke furniture and cabinets than in pre-Covid times. We are fortunate to have enough space for our team of craftsmen to be spaced apart, along with all the current safety guidelines which are in place to ensure the health and safety of all our employees.
Which is all just as well as we have, very happily, noticed a spike in enquiries for home improvements, especially home office areas, studies and media units. And whilst the trend for large open family kitchens has been growing, steadily, for a number of years now, this trend continues at a pace as the hope of entertaining is finally creeping back on to the agenda for most of us.
So yes, we know we’re one of the lucky small, local businesses to be here some 12 month after this pandemic landed, and as long as people want their homes improving and/or extending we plan on being around a lot longer!

  • Green is the colour!

    Green is the colour!

The large, open plan space lends itself, perfectly , to the rich colour of the bespoke Shaker cabinets, creating a kitchen zone where the vibrancy of the blue/green pops in the otherwise neutral colour scheme of the wider space. We’re excited to see how much green is taking off in kitchen trends and this particular shade is bang on trend!
Providing ample space for sitting as well as prepping and storage, the large kitchen island with its CRL Quartz Calacatta worktop is as functional as it is beautiful. The sharp white marble finish is durable enough for family living and pairs beautifully with the integrated Neff hob and downdraft extractor.
The shelving above the sink run looks fab with the integrated lighting and adds the touch of personality that comes with a totally bespoke design, whilst the Quooker Flex Tap in Stainless Steel looks elegant against the Quartz worktop. Finally, check out the tall cupboard with its spice rack (or bottle holder) built into the door. All of our cabinetry is built to your specification so that no space, no matter how small is wasted. Genius!

  • New Project in Welwyn

    New Project in Welwyn

In this project the kitchen and living areas have been hand built in a classic Shaker style which is sure to stand the test of time but with some lovely contemporary touches. The mirror splashback, in the kitchen, allows the natural light to bounce around the kitchen and the copper accents are bright and stylish and keep the whole look current. The pendants are from tom Dixon @tom_dixon11.
The cabinets are hand painted in F&B’s downpipe which is a favourite, and for good reason. It contrasts beautifully with their chalky Wimbourne White and, in an open plan living situation like this, it sets the kitchen area apart from living area.
At Planet we love combining two finishes. Here, the Corian worktop in Vanilla sits beautifully with the Solid Oak Breakfast Bar which in itself is great with a wooden floor.
The colours and finishes continue into the Living Room which unifies the whole look. The cupboards and shelving are painted in Wimbourne White with accents of the Downpipe on the back panels of the shelving. A drinks cabinet has become a popular addition to our projects, and no wonder! It’s a stylish and fun addition to the room. With doors closed it blends perfectly with the run of storage cupboards and open – no detail has been overlooked. It has integrated lighting and the worktop is the same Vanilla Corian as the kitchen. To complete the drinks cupboard a scalloped oak wine rack below has been hand built by our skilled craftsmen.

  • New Project!

    New Project!

Introducing our latest project from our Next125 range. The renovation in Hitchin features the renowned German range which is a perfect choice for a contemporary look that is stylish and sleek and built to the highest standards.
We love how the run of tall cabinets in a Walnut Veneer the Indigo Blue Lacquer and mirrors the wide planked Solid Walnut breakfast bar. The Walnut reflects other pieces of furniture in the wider living space and brings the whole look together.
The integrated Neff appliances gives a smart, uncluttered finish and the Caesarstone Raw Concrete worktops are tactile and functional and provide a lovely contrast to the Walnut. Once again we are pleased to be able to include a Quooker Flex tap in Stainless Steel.
This is a fantastic living space for the whole family and we were delighted to work with them to achieve a look that works across both the kitchen and living areas.
